Star Wars Costume Designer Dissects Rey's Scavenger Look

The costume designer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens gave some insight into how Rey’s outfit was designed. Michael Kaplan previously worked with director J.J. Abrams on his 2009 Star Trek reboot. He says the first thing he took into consideration was Rey’s backstory and environment. Rey is poor, works as a scavenger, is very quick, and lives a hot and bright desert climate. Kaplan says all of Rey's clothing was necessary and not for decoration.
