Summer babies could be starting school with football-inspired names in a few years. The baby name website ChannelMum.com surveyed parents following the England team’s World Cup success, and the results were surprising.

It turns out the Three Lions have had a major impact on baby names in recent weeks. And one of the UK's most unpopular monikers could even make a comeback.

Gareth ranked at 117 in the popularity charts in 1996, according to ChannelMum's research. After Gareth Southgate's World Cup penalty miss in the same year, the name dipped to 1,903 in the ranking.

However, the waistcoat-wearing England manager has sparked a revival in interest in the name Gareth, which is of Welsh origin and means gentle. Almost two thirds (65%) of parents surveyed said it will make a resurgence due to the World Cup, and 84% believe more parents will now look to football when choosing a name.

Harry Kane has also been an inspiration on the name front this summer. Parents predict the biggest popularity rise will be for the name Harry, with 83% expecting an uplift. A further 77% say there will be more baby Kanes, with 41% suggesting Jordan will make a comeback after goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s heroic performance in the tournament.

We shouldn't be surprised if the name Lion starts to crop up, either. A quarter of parents said the unusual moniker is set to surge.

'With the manager and team acting with grace and dignity, the names choices now seem fresh and modern rather than a little tacky,' baby names expert SJ Ljungstrom said.

'With Southgate's growing cult appeal, Gareth could become a popular choice which cuts across class and UK regions, while Harry and Jesse are already on the up, and watch out for Kane to make a comeback too.'
