As temperatures rise and we're out and about more soaking up some summer sun, it's always good to have a new hairstyle to flaunt when down on the beach or at a friend's barbecue.

With styles changing year-by-year, it can often be hard to stay on top of trends and find the best products to maintain the haircut that you want. However, we've complied this guide to give you some ideas of how to keep on top of your hair whilst the sun is shining.

From short to long, curly to straight, look no further than these four summer cuts.

The best haircuts for the summer

The Fonda (layers, layers, layers)

This look works for shoulder to long-length hair. Ask your stylist for a heavy fringe that’s tapered at the outer edges, and to create short layers around the crown for a choppy style, inspired by a ’70s Jane Fonda. This looks great dried naturally, allowing your hair to do its own thing. Scrunch in a pea-sized amount of soft clay, like Larry King’s Velvet Texture Clay, £22, to enhance the layers and bring out the details of the cut.

Model Grace Anderson at Premier. Charm necklace, £895, Roxanne First.

The Winona (the soft pixie)

The new crop takes its premise from the classic pixie, but the hairline around  the nape is left longer for softer edges. There are various ways to style this cut. For daytime, add mousse to wet hair and scrunch it, as you are drying to create separation and movement. Try using a straightener, like the Dyson Corrale Straightner, to create bends and flicks throughout the width of the fringe. For evening, add a side parting and apply a soft gel, such as Baxter of California’s Thickening Styling Gel, £13, on wet hair and leave to dry naturally.

Model Lydia Graham at Models 1. Gold hoops, from £85, and gold ‘peace’ dangly, £125, all Roxanne First.

The Lauryn (new wave)

Got curls? This is the time to embrace them in all their natural glory. Whether your hair is short or long, tease out your curls and coils and wear them to their fullest. As for the cut, a round, layered shape, like singer Lauryn Hill’s, will accentuate your texture. For a full head of curls, apply a styling oil, like Redken’s Oil For All, and a leave-in conditioner to wet hair, then either diffuse into tight coils or dry with a wide-toothed nozzle attachment, such as the one available with Dyson’s Supersonic hairdryer, to extend the curls and exaggerate shape, as seen here.

Model Dani Souza  at Select. Rose-gold and diamond eternity ring, and white-gold and diamond eternity ring, both £1,795, Roxanne First.

The Demi (the new bob)

The bob has been given a classy upgrade for summer, hitting a short chin-length with clean, blunt ends – reminiscent of Demi Moore in Indecent Proposal. To style, start by shampooing hair with a strengthening and repairing shampoo and conditioner, such as Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner, £19.35 each, to give hair some weight. Use a volumiser like Pureology’s Clean Volume Weightless Mousse, £15.80, at the roots, then blow-dry using fingers, by gently rubbing sections of hair together as you dry, for an unstructured ‘day-old’ texture. Add gloss by applying Larry King Haircare A Social Life For Your Hair, £12, through to the ends. For a more polished feel, curl the ends under with a round brush and a dryer.
