Just like cold tea bags, cucumber has long been hailed an all-natural remedy for sore, puffy eyes brought on by hayfever, wearing contact lenses or over zealous air-conditioning. Cucumber is even said to help banish eye bags and fade dark circles.

But are there genuine benefits to using cucumber on eyes, or is this beauty advice an old wives tale?

We asked Ashish Mathur, eye care specialist at Feel Good Contacts, whether cucumber has any benefits for eyes.

Does cucumber work on eyes?

"Yes, cold cucumbers can help provide instant relief to dry, puffy and tired-looking eyes and reduce swelling," Ashish says. "They also have a high-water content which can help to hydrate and moisturise the eye area when it's puffy. This will calm your skin as it narrows blood vessels and slows down the blood flow to the area around your eyes."

He adds: "Cucumbers are also high in vitamin C, folic acid and antioxidants which can help with brightening the appearance of skin, albeit temporarily."

How long do you have to keep cucumbers on your eyes?

Anything from five to 15 minutes can hydrate the eye area and soothe puffy eyes.

What other home remedies work for puffy eyes?

"Home remedies for keeping your eyes and skin healthy should always start with the easy option of drinking lots of water, and ensuring your diet is packed with healthy fruit and veg," Ashish says. "This will give your body enough crucial antioxidants along with skin-purifying vitamin C and E to improve the skin around your eyes."

"Aside from your diet, cold eye masks which you store in the freezer will also be of use to act in a similar cooling fashion to the cucumber and reduce puffiness quickly and effectively."

How do you use cucumbers on eyes?

Simply slice two thin cucumber circles and apply one to each eye.

Does cucumber help dark lines and eye bags?

Cucumbers are high in vitamin K which improves blood circulation to banish dark lines. The hydration boost from the green vegetable is also soothing for under-eye bags, but probably won't eradicate either completely.
