No longer shall we envy the chic café culture of Europe, because with more than four million bookings made already, nothing is going to stop Britons embracing dining alfresco when restaurants and cafes can finally open their terraces on Monday.

Even the flurries of snow this week seem unlikely to put us off booking those coveted tables, from pub gardens to stylish city bistros.

But it's been a long time since we've been collectively 'out' out.

And there is an art to dressing al fresco in a capricious British spring for which there is only one solution: layering. That means starting with a statement on the outside.

Choose a pastel-coloured trench, such as Palones's cornflower classic, for a fancy breakfast.

Don a decorative jacket like Maje's warm cardigan-style tweed number for a relaxed lunch.

Or pour yourself into a tailored suit jacket with jaunty puff shoulders, such as Me+Em's version, for cocktail hour.

Now you've swapped your winter puffer for a chic outer layer, everything beneath can be just as smart, whether that's a pair of glamorous wide-legged trousers in crisp gingham from Uterque, or a pretty floaty silk dress from LK Bennett.

Worried it's still feeling a bit chilly? Well, here's the secret: with these outfits, there is endless room for extra under-layers.

Wide-legged trousers? No one will know if you are concealing a pair of silky long-johns. Delicate dress? Team it with a polo-neck and make a feature of it.

And if you still need that extra layer, just shrug a long Winser London cardigan over your shoulders, for a 2021 step up from the good old pashmina.
