And, for Victoria Beckham , that was capped when she was awarded an OBE by Prince William on Wednesday afternoon.

The world's media looked on as the 43 year-old received the accolade at Buckingham Palace, where she was accompanied by husband David and parents, Jackie and Tony.

But, while they were certainly proud of the ex-singer, Twitter was less-than-enamored.

In fact, a sizeable proportion of them were vocally unhappy that the millionaire was honoured for simply having a fashion range.

Earlier in the day a Twitter account for The Royal Family posted to the micro-blogging site: 'Victoria Beckham collected her #OBE from The Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace today, for services to the fashion industry.'

Instantly, critics hit back, with one in particular saying: "Contribution to fashion?! Biggest joke."

Speaking emotively, another said: "My father has saved countless lives as a doctor but clearly that isn't in the same league as 'services to fashion'. Never got even a thanks."

A third chimed in: "REALLY??? fashion warrants an OBE??? Ridiculous," while another sniped: "38 years in the NHS and no recognition! A joke."

Equally dismayed, another user wrote: "And she still cant bloody smile."

In part, the public's criticism comes from the fact that - despite her protestations of girl power - Victoria's eponymous label has been bailed-out financially be her husband David.

Becks, 41, came to the rescue after his wife's brand was left with a £3.8million deficit for 2014 despite a turnover of £34 million.
