Kingswear Castle, Devon

Kingswear Castle, at the mouth of the Dart Estuary, was completed in 1502 and was built to defend Dartmouth harbour - large guns were mounted inside on the ground floor.

But just 50 years later, the castle became redundant. This was partly due to the new guns at Dartmouth Castle - on the opposite side of the estuary - being able to cover the whole river and partly because Kingswear Castle's iron weapons, exposed to fierce weather, rusted too easily.
