All rights reserved The 10 places you can afford to go backpacking the longest  A lot of people have dreams of waving goodbye to their messy desks and heading off to a tropical climate with only their rucksack and a tatty crime novel for company.

But when it actually comes to the logistics of taking time off work and having the money to fund said travels, your wild plans can be sent crashing down to earth again quite quickly.

© Provided by National magazine company ltd (Hearst UK)  Thanks to Travelex's new research, though, that doesn't have to be the case, after their experts analysed the cost of living in 32 of Britain's most popular travel destinations to work out how long travellers could last on £500.

With this budget, Travelex estimated that travellers would eat out three times, have four soft drinks, two beers, a coffee and two trips using public transport every day. So where would you be able to travel the longest, and how long for?

The 10 destinations where £500 would last the longest

  1. Thailand - 44 days (currency, Baht)
  2. Mexico - 26 days (currency, MXN Peso)
  3. Jamaica - 25 days (currency, JM$)
  4. Bulgaria - 23 days (currency, BGN)
  5. Czech Republic - 23 days (currency, Koruna)
  6. Hungary - 22 days (currency, Forint)

  7. Poland - 22 days (currency, Zloty)

  2. Norway - 6 days (currency, Krone)

  3. Denmark, 7 days (currency, Krone)

  4. Netherlands, 8 days (currency, Euro)
  5. Belgium, 8 days (currency, Euro)
  6. Republic of Ireland, 8 days (currency, Euro)

Alongside the research, Travelex launched a spending calculator tool, which allows travellers to fill in details about where they're going, what they're going to spend their money on and what they need to budget for, and the tool will then give them a rough idea of how much money they'll need.
