The Duchess of Cambridge has revealed that the Lake District is a popular spot for secret family holidays with husband Prince William and their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

Kate reportedly made the admission to members of the public who had lined the market square of Keswick, Cumbria to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess during a royal visit on Tuesday.

One royal fan explained: 'She said that it was raining a lot and was a long way from their home in Norfolk, but they love it here.'

While another gave a glimpse into what the young family enjoy doing while they're in the area.

'She said that her children love coming here and walking in the fells,' the wellwisher explained. 'She told us how nice the Lake District was and how lucky we were to live so close to the mountains.'

Their choice of holiday destination is perhaps unsurprising as Kate and William are both passionate about the outdoors. Nature was a key theme in Kate's recent garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, while William and brother, Prince Harry recently paid tribute to their father Prince Charles for instilling a love of the British countryside in them as children.

Prince William revealed the brothers would often going on rambling holidays as children in a BBC documentary to mark Charles' 70th birthday last year. He said: 'He took us litter picking when we were younger, on holiday. We were in Norfolk on school holidays and we went out litter picking with him. We thought this is perfectly normal, everyone must do it. We were there with our spikes stabbing the rubbish into black plastic bags.'

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were in Cumbria to meet locals who support families and communities across the area. Kate styled out the rain in her favourite See By Chloe boots, black jeans and a £275 Troy London jacket.

It's been two royal engagements in just a few days for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. They attended Trooping the Colour with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Saturday.
