Petrol prices set to fall to less than £1 as supermarkets launch fuel forecourt war

Fuel will cost under £1 a litre for the first time in nearly a year as the supermarket price war intensifies.

Morrisons is cutting the price of a petrol to a maximum of 109.9p a litre at its 333 forecourts.

Then customers who shop at the supermarket giant will be entitled to fill up for 99.9p - a further cut of 10p a litre - if they spend £50 or more.

The move comes less than a week after Britain’s biggest supermarkets, including Morrisons, slashed prices by up to 3p a litre. It followed complaints they were profiteering by not passing on recent falls in the wholesale cost of fuel.

Morrisons says the latest cut is designed to help drivers with the cost of getting around during the pre Christmas shopping spree, starting with Black Friday. The promotion lasts until December 3.

For a typical 50 litre car, motorists will save £5 every time they fill up.

According to the website petrolprices.com, prices have remained above the £1.10 mark since the summer. The last time petrol fell below £1 a litre was last January.

Diesel car drivers who buy their groceries at Morrisons will also get a 10p cut taking prices to just above £1 a litre.

Morrisons services boss Roger Fogg said: “With Christmas around the corner, customers tell us they very much welcome our help in reducing the cost of fuel.

"That’s why we’re turning the clock back to the start of the year when petrol prices were typically below £1 a litre.”
