Black Friday spending to hit a record £2BILLION with 14m Brits cashing in on the pre-Christmas sale

Shoppers are expected to splash a record £2billion on Black Friday this week.

Around 14 million of us will join the 24-hour sale, blowing £2.3million a minute, says vouchercodes.co.uk and the Centre for Retail Research.

The £1.96billion predicted figure is up 19% on last year’s £1.65billion, the Sunday People can reveal.

A third of Brits are expected to cash in on the internet and high street pre-Christmas spree, which first took off in the US the day after Thanksgiving.

Online spending alone is expected to reach £1billion on Friday – with half the purchases done on mobiles. A separate study by credit card provider MBNA predicts Black Friday and the weekend, including Cyber Monday ’s online sales, will top £4billion.

But Which? has warned shoppers to “do research” after finding half last year’s deals were cheaper in the months before and after Black Friday. And charity Hubbub said the sale boosts debt, with people buying things they don’t need.

Amazon is cutting prices on thousands of items by up to 55% for 12 days – with £400 off a Sony Bravia 65in TV, leaving it at £1,299.

M&S is predicted to be lining up half-price deals. But Asda won’t be taking part after customers brawled in the aisles over bargains such as TVs last year.

Moneysavingexpert.com’s Martin Lewis, whose Money Show returns to ITV at 8pm on Tuesday, warned: “Sometimes discounts aren’t as great as they appear. Do your homework. Think, ‘do I actually need it?’

“If the answer is no, it’s not worth buying even at 90 per cent off.”
