A former water tower in Essex, which was once a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War, has been renovated into a five-storey home — and is now on sale for £1.2 million.

While the tower has long been an historical landmark in the area, not many knew its deep, dark secrets.

'The floors were all concrete and there were hatches in each one for a ladder which ran the full height of the building,' said Jon.

"It wasn't like they had just left the room but the communications equipment was still wired and secured to the walls – it was all rotten and rusty though from exposure.'

Jon and Vicky purchased the property for just £285,000 as part of a renovation project. 'We took a risk buying it, not knowing we would get planning permission. We have been able to save a local landmark that was derelict, disused and starting to deteriorate badly,' Jon said.

After a complete overhaul, inside the tower you'll now find a beautiful bespoke white kitchen, quartz tiled flooring, four en-suite bedrooms, a white-stone driveway, spacious reception rooms and one acre of sprawling land. Plus, the generously-sized dressing room has floor-to-ceiling cabinets, a free-standing bath and a dressing table..

It might not be your typical family home, but don't let that put you off: rooms are stylish, cleverly designed, modern, contemporary and nothing like what it was before the renovation.
