Kerry Gregory has been battling mould in her home since 2011

A mum says the mould in her house has gotten so bad there are mushrooms growing on her walls.

Kerry Gregory moved into her home in 2009, but just two years later mould started growing on her walls and it's now making her family constantly ill.

She says she is worried about the affect it is having on her three children, aged nine, five and 40 months, and is now bleach washing her walls regularly to try and stop the fungus.

"It all started coming through two years after I moved in," Kerry told the Plymouth Herald .

"Sovereign Housing came out and sorted it for me. Then I got some anti-mould paint out of my own pocket because they said that would stop it coming back."

Kerry alleges Sovereign Housing, who own her home in Keyham, near Plymouth, has refused to help her since around 2015 - and she's been instructed to fix the issue herself.

"They just tell me they're not going to do anything, it's my problem because it's condensation and I should open my windows for ten minutes and turn my heating on ten minutes," she said.

"I said that's funny when I've got kids this young. That doesn't work and I bleach wash my walls every month too.

"A man from Sovereign came round because Environmental Health were involved, but they all just say the same - that it's condensation."

The organisation insists it was only recently made aware of the problems - and is now taking prompt action to sort out the problem.

A specialist team has been booked up and will be paying a visit to find out what's happening.

Kerry's youngest, Kyle, was born three weeks early and the mum-of-three said she was unable to open the windows at all then in fear he would get sick.

"He had a low immune system so I couldn't open the windows," she said.

"All three of my kids are always getting sick - it could be the flu or sometimes it's something in their chest.

"This mould is in every single room. The kids have to sleep downstairs because they can't sleep in their own bedrooms. I'm frustrated and angry that nothing's being done.

"I have mushrooms growing on my walls."

A Sovereign spokesperson said: "We were sorry to hear about the issues at Ms Gregory’s home and so, as soon as we were told of her concerns, we’ve been in touch to book in a damp and mould specialist as soon as possible.

"It’s true that mould can form because of condensation in some types of properties, so simple steps such as airing rooms and keeping the home at a consistent temperature can help.

“However the specialists, as part of their investigations, will be able to identify any issues and will make recommendations for both ourselves and the resident in order to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”
