Bicycle helmets

If you’re a fan of cycling, don’t take a chance on buying a used helmet, says Marc I. Leavey, MD, an internist at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. “A garage sale purchase may be harmful in several ways.” The item may be an older model, without the safety features of a newer one, or even have been subject to a recall, says Leavey. “In such cases, a brand new item, still in the box, may be a hazard.” Normal wear and tear may have weakened straps or clasps, or it may be missing some parts, such as fasteners or adjusters. And if the item was involved in any kind of accident, even without obvious damage, parts of the device that are designed to absorb impact may be significantly weakened, putting you at risk.
