The Prime Minister has said his top aide acted "in line with coronavirus guidelines" amid claims he broke lockdown rules by travelling to Durham, days after stringent restrictions were enforced.

Dominic Cummings has faced calls to resign after it emerged he travelled more than 260 miles from his London home during the lockdown that his boss Boris Johnson put in place. Number 10 has said Mr Cummings believes he was acting "legally and reasonably" because he travelled to ensure his child could be cared for.

The news comes as the public faces another Bank Holiday weekend apart from family members as a result of Covid-19 restrictions. Despite still not being able to visit relatives in their homes, some lockdown measures were eased last week, with authorities managing beaches and beauty spots bracing for a heavy haul of visitors expected to put social distancing rules under strain.

Questions also remain over whether Britons will be able to go on holiday this summer after Home Secretary Priti Patel announced plans, due to come into force on June 8, for visitors – including residents returning home from breaks – to quarantine for two weeks on their arrival into the UK.
