Boris Johnson may have to self-isolate for two weeks if Business Secretary Alok Sharma tests positive for coronavirus, Downing Street has confirmed.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said Mr Johnson would be willing to go back into quarantine if Mr Sharmer is confirmed to have contracted Covid-19, after the pair met at Number 10 earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the Government has been forced to defend its plans to enforce strict new quarantine rules for travellers after leading scientists condemned them as illogical. The PM's spokesman insisted: "As the number of infections within the UK drops, we must now manage the risk of transmissions being introduced from elsewhere.”

It comes as the virus death toll in the UK nears 40,000, after an increase of 113 on Thursday.
