The existence of the iPhone SE2 has been something of a talking point lately. With the iPhone 11 well and truly out there, leakers and analysts have trained their gaze on the future, and have reached the conclusion that next year will be a big year for Tim Cook and Co.

We’re not talking about the iPhone 12, however. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already cast his verdict on the form and function of next year’s main crop of Apple smartphones; he predicts that we’ll see a triad of iPhones, like this year, in 5.4in, 6.1in and 6.7in sizes. That’s right: the smallest and largest of Apple’s hypothetical handsets, says Kuo, will be even smaller and larger than usual.

Since making this prediction, Ming-Chi Kuo has produced another, and it concerns the fabled iPhone SE2. He anticipates that Apple will launch a new handset early next year (Q1 2020, to be precise) with the same internal specifications as the iPhone 11 in a form factor reminiscent of the iPhone 8. A little like, say, the iPhone SE, which wrapped the innards of the iPhone 6 in the body of the iPhone 5S.

That means the new handset will have a 4.7in display, with thick bezels and - crucially - a physical Touch ID button. This retro exterior will hide an A13 Bionic chip and 3GB RAM, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. The upshot is that the handset will be a fair bit cheaper than its stablemates, which in practice means it will cost less than the current minimum of £739 set by the iPhone 11.

Of course, short of breaking into Apple HQ, there’s no way of knowing how legitimate these claims actually are. That said, Ming-Chi Kuo has a bit of a reputation for accurately predicting Apple-related announcements long before they occur. This clairvoyance has been well-utilised in the past to predict the arrival of just about every major Apple product. We’re not kidding: in 2014, he successfully predicted every single Apple product launch for the entire year.

In any event, Apple fanatics the world over have been hoping for an iPhone SE2 for some time now, so we’re keeping our fingers tightly crossed.
