Muslim man set on fire in horror attack as he walked home from a Birmingham mosque

Counter terrorism police are investigating an attack on a man who suffered facial burns as he made his way home from a mosque in Birmingham.Officers said they are aware of a similar incident in the Ealing area of London and we are working with the Metropolitan Police Service to see whether they are linked.They have asked the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to them.The victim was attacked as he walked along Shenstone Road in Edgbaston just after 7pm yesterday (Monday, March 20) after leaving Dudley Road Mosque.West Midlands Police said that the assailant spoke to the man briefly before spraying an unknown substance and then his jacket was set alight - causing burns to his face.The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries - which are not believed to be life threatening.Officers have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder this afternoon (Tuesday, March 21).Police said he was identified by officers who were in the area carrying out inquiries. He remains in police custody as further investigations take place and extra patrols are in the area to offer reassurance to residents.
