Sega has announced it's going to start making all its old games - including Sonic the Hedgehog - available to play on mobile for free.

All the company's cherished games will be eventually re-launched under the umbrella of the "Sega Forever" catalogue on iOS and Android.

And it's starting off strong with the original Sonic from 1991 and a few other classic Sega titles like Phantasy Star II and Kid Chameleon. Each game will be available to play offline and will run an advert beforehand. If you'd rather pay up and remove the ads, it'll cost £1.99 per game.

The company has added a few modern features such as cloud saving, leaderboards and the option to play with a Bluetooth controller to each game.

Eventually, Sega says it will be adding games from the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast console eras to compliment the Mega Drive and Master System titles.

“Above all else Sega Forever is a celebration of nostalgia," said Mike Evans, chief marketing officer of Sega’s Mobile Division in the West.

"It’s about allowing fans to reconnect with past experiences and share them with family and friends in an accessible and convenient way."

Sega says it will add new titles every two weeks and will continue to expand the collection with both official emulations and ported games. It appears the company could be following the example set by one-time rival Nintendo, which has cautiously begun to embrace the mobile gaming ecosystem.

“Join us on a journey of rediscovery as we roll out two decades of classic games free on mobile," Evans said.

"Create your own ‘Sega Forever folder’ and collect your favourite classics. Enjoy moments of nostalgia on the go, or sync a Bluetooth controller to enjoy a console-like experience in your living room.

"SEGA Forever democratizes retro gaming, and seeks to change how the world plays, rediscovers, and shares in classic game experiences.”
