This charity superhero has raised £500,000 using just collecting tins

Charity worker Ian Johnson has more dedication than you can shake a stick at.

He has travelled the country distributing his purple collection tins.

In ten years the number he has placed in cafes, newsagents, and grocery stores has grown from 200 to 1,100 and they have brought in £450,000.

The money has enabled Salford -based Kidscan to carry out crucial work.

Set up in 2002, the charity supports research in the region into finding treatments which are less damaging to the bodies of children and young adults.

Ian, from Old Trafford, works full time visiting shops that have Kidscan tin on their counter, and trying to persuade others to do so.

“I was doing some volunteering for fundraising events and someone said you can do this.

“At first in 2008 we had 200 boxes in shops in Salford, Manchester, and others parts of Greater Manchester.

“I travel, usually by train to Cheshire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Rhyl, and as far south as Wolverhampton and Shropshire.

“I have done it for ten years, and don’t use a high pressure sell if shops already have other charity boxes on display.

“Because we are a small charity, and do not have a big marketing drive,and are not a brand name like The Christie, I explain to people why we need their support.

“I aim to visit all the shops that have our boxes three times a year, to collect and replace them, and take the opportunity to find new shops in that area that will help us. Also it is important to keep the boxes presentable.

“Shops where there is a regular turn over of customers do best for us, like newsagents and convenience stores. We get change from notes, which is a lot of copper and ten pence and twenty pence pieces.

“We do sometimes get notes as well. On average the boxes bring in about £62,000 a year.”

“People may not think that our purple tins on counters across the country make much of a difference, but they’re a core part of our fundraising. These humble tins are helping to fund vital research into new treatments that will help children with cancer to survive.”

Cancer is the leading cause of death in children in the UK with around 1,600 children being diagnosed each year. Unfortunately 1 in 5 of these will not survive. Every day six families receive the terrible news of a childhood cancer diagnosis.
