On April 26, 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in northern Ukraine exploded, sending radioactive cloud across the region. The nearby town of Pripyat, which housed plant workers and their families, was evacuated and the inhabitants left all their belongings as they were. Pripyat has remained uninhabited since, as scientists have estimated that the region would not be safe for human habitation for thousands of years.
