Spread over 5.4 million square miles (14 million square kilometers), it is almost one-and-a-half times larger than the U.S. and is the fifth largest continent in the world. Almost all of it is covered with ice; less than one percent is actually ice-free, permanently. 

Fun fact: Wind speeds can reach a staggering 200 miles per hour (320 kilometers per hour).
