Hit and run driver Aidan McAteer was today jailed for nine years and four months over the crash that killed little Violet-Grace Youens.

McAteer was also banned from driving for 10 years and his sentence will include three years and four months for fleeing the scene and leaving the country.

The 23-year-old sat with his head bowed as Liverpool Crown Court heard how his reckless driving led to the tragic death of the four-year-old and caused life-changing injuries to her nan, Angela French.

Dean Brennan - a passenger in the stolen Ford Fiesta at the time of the collision - was jailed for six years and eight months and was banned from the roads for nine years and four months after he helped McAteer flee the country.

A packed court room sat through an emotional hearing today, with family members of Violet-Grace among those listening to heartbreaking details of her death.

The court heard how McAteer was spotted driving the car at speeds of up to 83mph as he raced through residential streets busy with families preparing to pick children up from school.

After running through two red lights the Fiesta struck Ms French and Violet-Grace, who had just been picked up from her great-auntie’s, on Prescot Road at 3pm.

The shocking collision left Violet-Grace with fatal injuries and her nan so badly injured that she remains in hospital.

In the aftermath of the crash, as traumatised witnesses rushed to help the pair, McAteer and Brennan, 27, fled the scene.

Brennan later picked up McAteer’s passport to help him flee the country.

McAteer had pleaded guilty to causing the death of Violet-Grace Youens by dangerous driving and causing serious injury to Angela French by driving a Ford Fiesta dangerously.

Brennan admitted aggravated vehicle taking and assisting an offender.
