The UK had two extra bank holidays in 2022, one for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and another to commemorate her funeral.

And there will be another additional day off this year, as the nation gets a holiday to mark King Charles’s coronation.

Here are all the bank holiday dates for 2023, and how the nation will commemorate the new monarch being crowned.

When are the bank holidays in 2023?

Bank holiday dates vary slightly across the UK: England and Wales always have the same bank holidays, but Scotland and Northern Ireland have some of their own dates.

For example, Scotland’s summer bank holiday falls at the start of August, rather than the end of the month.

All four nations used to mark the same date, following the implementation of the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, introduced by the Liberal politician, Sir John Lubbock.

However, the date for England, Wales and Northern Ireland moved permanently to the end of August in 1971, following a trial period which started in 1965.

When is King Charles’ coronation?

Just as in 2022, the UK’s bank holidays in 2023 are augmented by a significant royal event, as all nations mark the coronation of King Charles III in May.

The Government confirmed in November that the whole country would get a day off to celebrate the event on Monday 8 May, two days after the ceremony in Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May.

In a statement, Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, said the coronation of a new monarch was “a unique moment” for the country.

He said: “In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional bank holiday for the whole United Kingdom next year.

“I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour.”

First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said the Scottish Government wants to give as many people as possible the opportunity to join the celebrations in the “historic moment”.

She said: “Scotland will want to send its best wishes to His Majesty, King Charles III, and the Queen Consort.”
