A former Coronation Street and Cold Feet actress has died suddenly at the age of 39.

Melanie Hughes has been described as a ‘lovely soul’ who was ‘kind and gentle’ by husband Rick, 49.

He said the death of his wife, from Ewloe, Wales, had left the entire family ‘absolutely devastated’.

Melanie won the Miss Wales title in 1997, before competing at the Miss International competition in Tokyo.

She also acted and had previously had smalls parts in programmes including Coronation Street and Cold Feet.

Rick told the Daily Post : “Mel was a lovely soul, she was kind and gentle. Mel was so kind-hearted and had time for absolutely everyone.

“We are absolutely devastated at the loss of such a wonderful spirit and will never ever forget her.”

The couple had a three-year-old child called Kaden, while Mel was also stepmum to Rick’s 16-year-old daughter Taylor.

Rick said: “Kaden doted on his mummy. He is asking where mummy is.

“We had a holiday-of-a-lifetime two months ago in Disney World Florida with my family and I am so glad we did, as that has so many pictures with so many memories.

“Mel was better looking than all the Disney Princesses and she will always be my Miss Wales.”

Both Mel and Rick grew up in Holywell and attended the town’s high school at different times. Rick said that, despite the sense they had known each other “forever”, the couple got together 10 years ago.

He said: “We got engaged at the Trevi Fountain in Rome a few years later and married in June 2011 at Greenfield Church. The honeymoon was in Mauritius where Mel’s mum, Jotee, is from and obviously all of Jotee’s family.

“Mel had never been to Mauritius, so (it) made perfect sense to have our honeymoon there. We stayed at a hotel but had different days meeting Mel’s beautiful Mauritian family who she had never met.

“It’s an experience I will treasure.”

Mel worked at Kingspan, in Greenfield, Wales, for 15 years - and Rick said staff had been left devastated by her death.

North East Wales coroner John Gittins has been informed of her death.
