Purley stabbing: 'Teenager' killed and two hurt as knife violence breaks out in south London

A male believed to be in his late teens has died and two others have been injured as knife violence broke out in Croydon, south London.

Police and paramedics were scrambled to Brighton Road, Purley, shortly after 9pm on Thursday.

Two males, both believed to be in their late teens, were rushed to hospital suffering knife wounds. A third, also believed to be in his late teens, died at the scene.

One of those injured in the violence was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Officers said there were a number of crime scenes in place and that an investigation was under way.

Diners were reportedly forced to flee from a Pizza Express restaurant as the terrifying incident unfolded nearby.

A witness told MyLondon: "The whole road [has been] closed with about 10 police cars. There was a stabbing on the High Street and then a stabbing at the station.

"We were told they were both linked. We had to leave Pizza Express out of the back door."

Images from the scene showed police cars lining the street surrounding Purley railway station.

A second victim suffered a stab wound in the violence. He remained in hospital in a stable condition.

Another male suffered a slash wound that was not life-threatening. He was taken to hospital for treatment and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Two other men were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. They were taken to south London police stations where they remained in custody.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer.

“London’s air ambulance was also dispatched to the scene.

“We treated two patients at the scene and took them to hospitals as a priority. Sadly a third patient died at the scene."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. Despite their efforts, a male, believed to be aged in his late teens, died at the scene at 9.50pm.

“Next of kin are yet to be informed. Formal identification has not taken place.

He added: “Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command are investigating. A number of crime scenes are in place. Enquiries continue."
