A university scientist has revealed the best escape routes out of London in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

In the unlikely event that a rapid pandemic of some kind of zombie virus sweeps through London, Professor Lewis Dartnell, of the University of Westminster, has plotted the best routes for survivors to take.

The unnerving study comes as Now TV celebrates the return of the popular series, the Walking Dead. And to mark the start of season nine the streaming service revealed a high proportion of people have actually considered putting together an escape plan if the dead roamed the earth.

One in four said they had "at least a vague" plan in place already, while one in six have considered putting together a "survival kit" to survive the apocalypse, according to a study of 2,000 Brits.

Shaun of the Dead wannabes said the most common items that people would secure to brave the wastelands would be food, water, weapons, tampons and condoms.

It makes for a slightly more realistic version of the series which does not really deal with matters of personal hygiene, while Rick Grimes and co battle a siege of "Walkers", cannibals and the followers of Negan.

Zombie Apocalypse survival kit

This is what you want in your zombie survival kit, according to the experts

  • Weapons fashioned from piles and tool (you'll struggle to find a samurai sword)
  • Stockpile food and water
  • Iodine tablets to purify water (you can also disinfect water by leaving it in the sun)
  • Chapstick, vaseline, hairspray (for starting a fire)
  • Sat-nav GPS (don't rely on your smartphone)
  • Warm clothing, waterproofs and hiking boots
  • Condoms can store a gallon of water
  • An unravelled tampon can make a good medical dressing or kindling for a fire

London was the second most likely place in the world for a Zombie virus to strike first, the survey found - second only to New York.

Professor Dartnell put together a list of tips for zombie fans including his suggested escape routes to get out of London as he suggested the top priority should be getting away from populated areas.

The professor of science communication said: “Not only will they become the densest concentrations of zombies, but modern urbanized areas simply won’t be habitable once the technological bubble that supports them disappears: no electricity, running water or gas.

“Very large numbers of people would succumb almost immediately in the packed cities. The ‘average’ survival time would be a matter of days.

‘’Leave your house behind and head for isolation and make your first destination a camping shop for warm clothing, waterproofs and some sturdy hiking boots.

‘’Rely on a car GPS device instead of smart phone maps – you’ll soon be losing phone signal when power grids go down."

But while many Brits said they would try to secure a shotgun, samurai sword or a crossbow, he said weapons will be very difficult to find in the UK so people should rely on their own ingenuity.

‘’With regard to weapons I suggest relying on your own ingenuity and resourcefulness, fashioning what you need from metal pipes or nails," added Prof. Dartnell, who wrote The Knowledge: How to Rebuild our World from Scratch.

The Walking Dead returns to Fox on Mondays, 9pm.
