A source has published a report claiming that the anticipated Escape From Tarkov-inspired 'DMZ' mode will be launching free-to-play in 2023.

The upcoming 'DMZ' mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has not been officially confirmed by Activision, but numerous rumors have been circulating for some time around its development. The mode is said to be heavily inspired by Escape From Tarkov — a hardcore, survival multiplayer game with a harsh perma-death feature. Activision previously announced that a third mode, alongside MW2 and Warzone, was in development and that it would be different to any Call of Duty title so far.

The new report comes courtesy of leaker @RalphsValve via WhatIfGaming, who said the "mode has been in production for approximately four years and has seen a number of changes throughout development."

"At launch, players will see a traditional Call of Duty release, bundled with 3 modes: Single-player, Multiplayer, and an all-new Co-op experience; followed by Warzone 2.0 reportedly set to release in December of this year," the leaker said.

According to Ralph, the DMZ mode has been assigned a release for Q1, 2023, on the condition that Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0 meet expectations.

The report also claims that the rumored mode will be open world and have its own elaborate storyline with ties to the main campaign of Modern Warfare 2.

Concrete details surrounding the DMZ mode are few and far between, given that Activision have yet to formally confirm the mode's existence. As we move closer to the launch of Modern Warfare 2, perhaps we'll be privy to more information.
