Watford's FA Cup replay against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Tuesday has been postponed following heavy rainfall.

Strong winds and rain hit the UK overnight, causing the Met Office to issue a weather warning, while Liverpool Women’s match against Manchester United on Sunday at the same ground was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Watford began their journey up to Tranmere on Tuesday amid fears the game would fall victim to the weather.

A statement on Watford's website on Tuesday afternoon confirmed: "Tonight's Emirates FA Cup third round replay against Tranmere Rovers has been postponed, following heavy rainfall from Storm Brendan at Prenton Park since Sunday.

"Both clubs were in regular contact with each other, the referee and the Football Association over the past two days, discussing the options available.

"However, following a pitch inspection this afternoon, the referee decided the match unfortunately could not go ahead.

"The date for the rescheduled match will follow as soon as possible."

Watford could now face a congested fixture list, given they play Tottenham on Saturday and Aston Villa on Tuesday before FA Cup fourth-round ties take place the following weekend.
