Former Bristol Rovers favourite Jamie Cureton has wished Joey Barton well after he was appointed as The Gas’ new manager yesterday.

The controversial ex-Newcastle midfielder has been out of work since leaving Fleetwood Town at the start of the year, but he has now been confirmed as Paul Tisdale’s successor at the League One outfit.

Barton will have a big challenge on his hands to turn things around at the Memorial Stadium, as the Pirates are currently hovering dangerously above the relegation zone, as they hold a two-point lead over 21st placed AFC Wimbledon.

However, his appointment has been met with optimism generally, and that was reflected by Cureton, who sent a message to the new boss on Twitter.

Joey Barton, good luck in your new role as Bristol Rovers manager, it’s a great club.”

Rovers have a place in the heart of Cureton, who enjoyed a hugely successful four years with his hometown club from 1996, where he would go on to score 79 goals in almost 200 games, before earning a move to Reading.

Barton’s first game in charge is against Wigan at home this evening.

The verdict

It’s nice for the fans to see Cureton send a message like this, as it shows he still cares about the club.

And, most supporters would echo his thoughts. Whether they agreed with Barton’s appointment or not, it’s now about backing the new man to deliver success that the club crave.

But, whilst Barton no doubt has long-term ambitions, the immediate priority has to be getting away from the relegation zone, which needs to start with three points tonight against a struggling Wigan side.
