Ademola Lookman has explained that the opportunity for “a new challenge” is what led to him signing for RB Leipzig on loan from Everton on transfer deadline day.

Lookman’s loan switch to last seasons Bundesliga runners-up was seen as a major surprise, given how manager Sam Allardyce had said that the young forward would not leave on loan, just several days prior.

Despite Aaron Lennon and Kevin Mirallas departing in the winter window, the signing of Theo Walcott from Arsenal and the return to fitness of Yannick Bolasie saw Lookman’s opportunities shorten at Goodison Park, leading to his loan spell for the remainder of the current campaign.

Furthermore, as if to add the icing to a frustratingly week, Lookman scored a late goal on his Bundesliga debut to win the game 1-0 over Borussia Monchengladbach, while his Everton teammates were hammered 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

Talking to the Bundesliga website, Lookman described why he chose Leipzig, saying;

“I wanted a new challenge, a new league.”

“The Bundesliga has a great reputation in England.”

“Top stadiums with good, physically strong and disciplined players and games played at a high level.”

“[Leipzig sporting director] Ralf Rangnick played a big role, too.”

“He had been watching me for a long time and has always maintained contact. He’s a fantastic guy.”
