Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahmovic is unlikely to play again this season after picking up a knee injury against Anderlecht on Thursday, Sky Sports report.

The Swede landed awkwardly after contesting a header during the extra-time win over the Belgian side, jarring his knee and being substituted soon after. Marcus Rashford scored the winner but the news regarding Ibrahimovic's injury is a major blow for Red Devils fans.

The former PSG forward has supplied 17 of United's 48 Premier League goals so far this season and has been pivotal in their domestic and European pursuits during his stay in England, scoring in the Community Shield and the EFL Cup final.

United's next top scorer in the Premier League is Juan Mata, who is also sidelined for the remainder of the campaign through injury, but Rashford has come back into form in recent weeks and now looks set to lead United's forward line for their remaining matches.

United manager Jose Mourinho said after Thursday's match that he believed Ibrahimovic could be ruled out for a period, but also that he was trying to remain optimistic.

He said, as quoted by BBC Sport: "I want to wait but my feeling is not good for both. I want to wait and be optimistic but I am not."

Defender Marcos Rojo was also withdrawn due to injury and Mourinho called on Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to play despite having toe and knee problems respectively.

"They have to be brave now. If it was me, it [returning from injury] would be tomorrow," Mourinho added.

"It is time for Jones and Smalling to be brave, to risk, because for the team we have to do everything. That is the way we think."
