Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has offered his backing to under-fire Arsene Wenger, insisting the manager is the reason he joined Arsenal.

Wins against AC Milan and Watford have earned Wenger momentary respite but the Arsenal manager has little room to manoeuvre with the Gunners effectively out of contention for a top four and the Europa League their last remaining hope of silverware.

Aubameyang is ineligible to play in that competition due to the participation of his former club Borussia Dortmund, a situation he has admitted has been “frustrating”.

The 28-year-old has been doing his bit to ease the burden on Wenger, scoring and providing an assist in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Watford, and has offered the Arsenal manager his complete support.

“I am really happy because I am here because of him,” Aubameyang told reporters.

“He had the interest in me so I am happy to play for him.”

Arsenal’s record signing at £56million, Aubameyang arrived to significant expectations that he has only just begun to reach.

The Gabon striker has scored in each of his last two games and believes he is getting back to his best after a disrupted January when his attempts to secure a move to Arsenal saw him miss sevral games for Dortmund.

“I'm feeling really better; in January I didn't play a lot so it was difficult when I came here, but I'm feeling better and I try to do my best of course for the team and for the club,” Aubameyang told BBC Africa Sport.

“I think the team did very well and we are all happy, we are feeling better of course. We feel the confidence is back.”
