Rory McIlroy has revealed he suffered a heart scare in the off-season that he'll have to manage in 2018.

After a winless 2017, in which the Northern Irishman battled a rib injury, McIlroy is preparing for a long-awaited return at the Abu Dhabi Championship.

McIlroy says his rib which led to four months out of the game is causing him no problems at all and is fully recovered.

But there was a surprise worry when he underwent a pre-season check-up.

"I’ve got a bit of an irregularity with my heart that I have to keep on top of," McIlroy said in an interview with The Telegraph.

“I have a flat T-wave and I’ll have to get an echo [cardiogram] on my heart every six months and an MRI scan every year."

McIlroy goes on to explain that the issue stems from a viral infection he suffered in China 18 months ago, which he's been told has left to the "thickening of my left ventricle and a bit of scar tissue."

"For now, I just need to stay on top of it and have to stay fit. Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway,” he said.

World No.1 Dustin Johnson will head up the strong field in the UAE, starting on Thursday, along with Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose.
