Brown keen for Scotland to play more games away from Hampden

Celtic captain Scott Brown has been discussing the prospect of the Scottish national team playing their fixtures away from Hampden Park in the future.

The experienced midfielder retired from international football last year after captaining Scotland on several occasions and has been talking about the Scottish FA’s decision to continue staging the team’s home fixtures at Hampden.

Brown, as quoted by STV, labelled Hampden Park as “possibly one of the worst stadiums I have played in” with regards to atmosphere during a recent interview.

“Hampden is possibly one of the worst stadiums I have played in for atmosphere. For Scotland, I think we should be playing at Celtic Park, Ibrox, then the smaller games – when you only get 17,000 – should be at Hibs and Hearts. The bigger games could be at Murrayfield as well. We have some great stadiums here but we choose to use the wrong stadium for a football match.”

The Celtic star hung up his boots at international level to ensure that he could turn his full attention towards the tasks at hand under Brendan Rodgers with the Hoops.

However, he has still had the chance to have his say on matters regarding the international team during the ongoing break, and he feels the Scottish FA are certainly making a mistake by persisting with Hampden as the team’s default home stadium.

“When they built it, it was built for a running track. You’re not going to get the fans and noise that scare the opposing players when they turn up. It’s easy for them to turn up… big open pitch, hardly any fans… it’s hard for the players.”

“You play at Celtic Park, Ibrox, Tynecastle… you have the atmosphere there and that’s what makes the opponents scared to come there and play.”
