Former Celtic defender Johan Mjallby has tipped Celtic to succeed in the Europa League this season.

The Scottish champions are playing in the 2nd tier of European football after a disappointing early Champions League exit, but Mjallby believes the Hoops could achieve something special this campaign.

The ex-Bhoys man, who reached a UEFA Cup final himself under Martin O’Neill in 2003, is very optimistic. He said:

“Why not? Definitely [Celtic can reach the final]. This team has been absolutely fantastic for two years, winning two Trebles. They have a lot of talent in the squad – good, good players.”

“We’ll have to wait and see how they do obviously in the group stage first – and it’s quite a tough group. But I think they’ve got every chance because they will improve in every game, I think.”

The group stages will take some negotiation, with Leipzig, Salzburg and Rosenborg providing stiff competition, but Celtic have all the experience and nous to navigate progression into the knockout rounds.

It’s fair to say Brendan Rodgers hasn’t quite cracked European football since being at Celtic Park, but this season gives him a real opportunity to do that.
