The Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes is due to attend Tottenham Hotspur’s FA Cup third-round replay against Middlesbrough this evening having been in London to tie up the 18-month loan deal that will bring midfielder Gedson Fernandes to the club.

The 21-year-old Benfica man will arrive on loan with an option to buy in a deal that has been overseen by Mendes, and will offer Spurs the cover in midfield that Jose Mourinho feels they lack following the injury to Moussa Sissoko.

The player undertook his medical on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the game against Middlesbrough. Mendes has been a key advisor and agent for Mourinho since the beginning of the Spurs coach's managerial career 20 years ago.

Fernandes missed the start of the season at Benfica with a fractured metatarsal and has only played seven league games this season. In fact, the midfielder last played 90 minutes at the end of October and since then has made just four appearances of less than an hour in total. Last season he made 36 appearances in all competitions This season he has fallen out of favour with Benfica manager Bruno Lage who has been reluctant to pick the academy graduate.

Given his age and the relative cheapness of the loan fee, around £3.8 million, Spurs and Mourinho see Fernandes as a low-risk, low-cost option to solve an immediate problem. The player’s parents live in the Tottenham area which has also helped convince all sides of its viability. He was on offer to Premier League clubs this window and a number, including West Ham, had shown interest.

He is a senior Portugal international and has played for the country throughout their junior age-groups. The question for Mourinho will be how soon Fernandes can adapt to the demands of the Premier League and Champions League given his relative inactivity for the last three months. Mourinho said that on Monday that Spurs’ three summer signings - Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele - had all been unable to make an immediate impact.
