Liverpool’s Premier League title bid has suffered an untimely blow after defender Joe Gomez was ruled out for up to six weeks with a leg fracture.

Gomez is not expected to return until next year after injuring his lower left leg in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday.

The England defender was stretchered off early in the first half, following a Ben Mee challenge which infuriated manager Jurgen Klopp, and there is actually relief inside Liverpool that the injury is not more severe.

Gomez was clattered into the advertising hoardings at Turf Moor after Mee’s tackle and Klopp criticised referee Stuart Attwell for being too lenient with Burnley’s players.

The 21-year-old will now miss the crucial Champions League tie with Napoli next week and Premier League games over the festive period against Manchester United, Wolves, Newcastle and Arsenal.

Liverpool issued a statement which read: “Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez sustained a fracture to the lower left leg during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday night.

“The defender needed to be substituted after 23 minutes at Turf Moor following a challenge from which he was unable to continue.

“Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday.

“Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though this is dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.”

Klopp hit out at Burnley’s tackling after the game and was involved in a number of confrontations with Sean Dyche.

He said after the game: "I said to the referee after the first sliding tackle (made) over six or seven yards, when he got the ball and everyone liked it: 'Please, tell them they cannot do that.'

"It wasn't a foul but they cannot do that. It's like bowling because then four or five times it happened. Joe is injured and probably not only a little bit."
