Jose Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes has taken the significant step of issuing a statement insisting his client will not be leaving Manchester United.

Mendes, whose other clients include Cristiano Ronaldo, said the club are happy with Mourinho despite recent struggles in the Premier League that have left the club languishing in eighth place, eight points off the top four.

“There have been more rumours of Jose Mourinho leaving Manchester United," said Mendes in a statement.

"It’s totally untrue. Jose is very happy at the club and the club is very happy with him. He has a long-term contract with Manchester United and is fully committed to the club in building a solid winning project.”

It was reported in The Sun newspaper earlier on Friday that United are ready to pay £40million to prise Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino from the club in the summer.

United have won just six of 15 games this season and their tally of 23 points is nearer to bottom side Fulham on nine than it is to league leaders and local rivals Manchester City.

Mourinho claimed after a 2-2 draw with Southampton on Saturday that his side would need a “miracle” to finish in the top four at the end of the season though he subsequently rowed back on those comments.
