Jose Mourinho has identified his top transfer target for the January window - but has been told he cannot sign him by Manchester United chief Ed Woodward.

The Portuguese coach admitted after the win over Everton that he may be forced into the transfer market this month.

Left-back has been a particular problem for United, with none of their current options convincing Mourinho they deserve a regular starting spot.

Tottenham defender Danny Rose, who could be available for around £50million, is Mourinho's first choice.

But sources claim that Mourinho is frustrated that Woodward has suggested younger, cheaper alternatives.

He is believed to have told the United boss that if he is to get Rose, he will have to offload some players or wait until the summer.

Mourinho said in December that he needs to spend a lot more than the £300m he already has, if United are to compete with neighbours Manchester City.

Despite still living in the Lowry Hotel, the Portuguese’s wish is to extend his stay at United beyond next season.

But frustrations with Woodward could force him into a rethink.

United beat Everton 2-0 on New Year's Day as Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard found the net.

But they remain 15 points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who beat Watford on Tuesday.
