Tottenham are reportedly set to sell Eric Dier this summer if the midfielder does not sign a new contract.

Dier's current deal expires at the end of next season, and Spurs are keen to avoid a repeat of the situation that saw Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen enter the final year of their contracts.

Speculation around Eriksen last summer appeared to unsettle the attacking midfielder heading into the start of this season, and the Dane ended up joining Inter Milan in the January transfer window.

While Alderweireld signed a new deal keeping him at Tottenham until 2023, fellow centre-back Vertonghen is now into the final six months of his contract and could leave for free this summer.

Tottenham do not want to be in the same situation with Dier- but according to the Daily Mail he is reluctant to commit to a new deal given his reduced game time since Jose Mourinho took over as manager at the back end of last year.

Dier, 26, has not started in the Premier League since before Christmas, and is said to want assurances over his first-team standing at Tottenham.

The holding midfielder faces the prospect of not being selected in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the Euro 2020 finals.

Dier made his professional debut at Sporting Lisbon before a £4million move to Spurs in 2014.

He has since made more than 200 appearances for the North London club and has won 40 England caps, and would not be short of offers if Tottenham decided to sell this summer.

Spurs face a tug of war for Vertonghen this summer with Ajax keen on a reunion.

Tottenham have not given up on persuading the 32-year-old to sign a new deal.

But Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has made it clear he is interested in throwing a spanner in the works.

Ten Hag said: “Jan has a history at Ajax. Of course we are following his situation very closely.

He added: "There is no question of any age limit here. If someone is good enough, it doesn't matter how old he is."
