Chris Robshaw is likely to miss out on the World Cup after being omitted from England’s first-phase training squad.

The former captain has been on a redemption mission since England's Ill-fated campaign in 2015 but has slipped down the Red Rose pecking order behind Mark Wilson and Brad Shields.

One of Eddie Jones’ first moves as England coach was to strip Robshaw of the captaincy but the flanker subsequently enjoyed a Test renaissance and has since captained the side.

However he has not played a Test for almost a year and his chances of avenging the pool stage exit of 2015 now appear to be bleak.

Jones’ selection move represents a changing of the old guard, with scrum-half Danny Care also set to be cut from his plans.

With Joe Marler currently retired, full-back Mike Brown is the only member of the stalwart Harlequins’ quartet expected to convene at a 29-man training camp at Pennyhill Park this Sunday.

Jones will announce his first wave of players on Thursday, but the list will not include anyone who featured in the play-offs, or the Barbarians fixture, because of a statutory five-week rest week.

That rules out any players from Saracens, Exeter, Gloucester and Northampton - as well as Marler himself, who currently remains retired despite being in the 45-man Elite Player Squad.

There will be a shortage of hookers due to the absence of Jamie George, Dylan Hartley and Luke Cowan-Dickie, so Sportsmail understands Jones is considering calling in Bristol’s Harry Thacker.

Worcester prop Nick Schonert is expected to feature alongside rookie Bath winger Ruaridh McConnochie, although flanker Zach Mercer is tipped to miss out.

Jones will filter in the remaining players over the next fortnight before naming an official 36-man training squad on July 4.

The deadline for submitting the final 31-man squad for Japan is September 2.
