Jack Clifford is to undergo more scans on his right shoulder to discover if he will need surgery that would rule him out of England’s autumn internationals.

The injury, which he sustained in last Friday’s win against Sale, is being given more time to settle and a decision on whether he goes under the knife is due to be made early next week.

Clifford is definitely out of his side’s opening European Champions Cup match against La Rochelle at the Twickenham Stoop on Saturday.

John Kingston, the Quins director of rugby, says his side must turn their ground into a fortress to progress in the competition.

He said: “The way it is set up makes for riveting viewing as a competition. La Rochelle had a fantastic season and have started well again and are a big, powerful side.

“We have to make home advantage count in the pool games. It is a really competitive group with Wasps and Ulster.”
