Georgios Samaras has retired from playing to take up a role with boyhood club OFI Crete.

The former Celtic striker has moved from the pitch to the boardroom for a role alongside his father, Giannis, according to reports in Greece.

The 33-year-old left Celtic in 2014 and had ill-fated spells at West Brom, Rayo OKC, Real Zaragoza and Samsunspor.

But he's decided to hang up his boots and take on his new job with the club he started his youth career with back in 1994.

Samaras spent six years at Crete before joining Heerenveen in 2000 but never played a first team game for the club.

American businessman Michael Bousis bought the club on Wednesday and Samaras is expected to be named as CEO of the club.

The Hoops hero spent six years at Celtic Park after initially joining on loan from Manchester City in 2008.

He played 249 times and scored 74 goals, winning four SPL titles, two Scottish Cups and League Cup before joining West Brom in 2014.
