Manchester United are likely to be given a boost ahead of their Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain by news that Edinson Cavani is expected to be ruled out.

PSG are already missing Neymar with right-back Thomas Meunier also definitely out of the first leg of the tie at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Meunier has suffered concussion and will be examined again at the end of this week before he can return to action.

The injury to Cavani is a potentially serious blow to PSG with the Uruguayan having suffered “an injured tendon” in his right hip during Saturday’s league victory over Bordeaux. Cavani scored the first-half penalty that settled the match but could not continue, leaving the pitch in discomfort.

PSG released medical updates on both Cavani and Meunier with the likelihood that the former will join the latter in not being able to face United.

“The treatment of this injury and the length of his unavailability will depend on the evolution of the injury over the coming days,” PSG said in its statement.

There are fears that Cavani may even be ruled out of the second leg of the tie – which Neymar will also miss after damaging the metatarsal he broke last year – in Paris on March 6.
