Best places to stay in Venice in springtime

Slide 1 of 19: Venice

Venice in springtime

Not that anyone needs an excuse to head to Venice in the springtime, but in case you're looking for one, April 25th is a public holiday among Venetians to celebrate the feast day of the city's patron saint, St Mark, and to remember the day Italy was liberated in the Second World War.

Don't miss:

The beautiful Basilica San Marco was built in Venice to house the remains of the patron saint. The grand, multi-domed church on Saint Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco), is one of Italy's most spectacular churches and one of Venice's top attractions.

A grand regatta, Regata di Traghetti, will take place on April 25, where brightly coloured gondolas representing the different regions of Venice compete against each other.

What to eat:

The traditional dish eaten on this day is risi e bisi, risotto with fresh peas and pancetta. Sample it at one of the many restaurants in St Mark’s Square.

On this day, men also give the object of their affections a rosebud – and it’s said that the longer the stem, the greater the affection.
