Easyvoyage Logo By Grace Barber of Easyvoyage | Slide 1 of 10: Located in Paris' historic Latin Quarter a stone's throw away from the Notre-Dame Cathedral, Shakespeare and Company is the city's most famous independent bookstore. Behind the shop's iconic yellow and green facade is a ramshackle literary oasis. Admire the shop's packed weathered wooden shelves, rustic chandeliers, and Parisian tiled floors. Specialising in English-language literature, you're sure to find new reading material among the stacks. The original Shakespeare and Company dates back to 1919 and saw the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Djuna Barnes and James Joyce pass through its doors. The shop that you see today was opened by George Whitman in 1951 as an homage to the original.
