World War II aircraft carrier wreck explored for the first time ever

In 1951 the USS Independence, an aircraft carrier from World War II, was purposefully sunk off the coast of San Francisco in 1951. Scientists have since been down to explore the shell of one of WWI's leading light aircraft carriers in a diving expedition. The dive was part of an expedition to explore the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary by the EV Nautilus in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Naval Historical Foundation.
