Motoring Research Logo By Tim Pitt of Motoring Research | Slide 1 of 21: Britain’s used car market hit a record high in 2016, with 8.2 million cars sold – an increase of 7.3%. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show superminis are the best-selling type of used car, although the popularity of SUVs rose fastest. We’ll count down the top 10 most popular second-hand cars in the UK last year. Is yours among them?

The UK’s most popular second-hand cars

We’re buying more used cars than ever, according to latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). More than 2.1 million of them changed hands in the first quarter of 2017 – 3.4% more than a year earlier and more than ever before.

Surprisingly, given the current anti-diesel mood, sales of used diesel cars increased by 5.6%, while used petrol cars saw a steady gain of 1.6%. Unsurprisingly, silver was the most popular car amongst used cars buyers, while sales of secondhand white cars shot up by 17.1%.
