Netflix original drama Gypsy has run out of steam after just a single season.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the Naomi Watts-starring series' 10-episode run is all we will ever see, despite its impressive cast and production team.

Gypsy told the story of Jean Holloway, a therapist who formed intimate relationships with the people who were close to her patients.

It was Naomi Watts' first starring TV role for over two decades, and the first small-screen directorial work for Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is perhaps best known for her work on the Fifty Shades of Grey film.

It's actually not altogether surprising that a high-profile Netflix original has been cancelled, as it chimes with what CEO Reed Hasting recently said about wanting more shows dropped.

"We've cancelled very few shows," Hastings said. "I'm always pushing the content team. We have to take more risks – you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall."

The cancellation comes after Watts praised Netflix for being "a fantastic place for storytelling" for women, "particularly this kind of character [in Gypsy] – it's just hard to find someone that's both good and bad".
